The T-series products have a common hardware base, with differences in memory size, USB and Ethernet ports etc. In general, it is possible to load firmware from a different model - for example to change a modem into a router. Early versions of the products used the ADAM2 bootloader; later versions have used PSPBOOT.

While it is possible to change the bootloader, this can be technically difficult and you may not be able to load firmware with the 'wrong' bootloader. I wouldn't be afraid to experiment; it is very difficult to harm an AR7 based product and in general any problem other than a hardware fault can be recovered. Browsing the firmware image for the DSL-2640T and the Release Notes seems to confirm that the product uses the PSPBOOT bootloader. In that case, attempting to load the DSL-G624T firmware will not work. However, you could try the firmware for the DSL-G604T Gen II available in Australia; as I said, the later products seem to use PSPBOOT rather than ADAM2. You can find that firmware on the D-Link AU site here: The DSL-G604T Gen II seems v similar in spec to the DSL-2640 (ADSL2+, QoS) and uses PSPBOOT, so you may like to experiment with that firmware.

The switch is supported at a generic 'compatibility' level (meaning that the four ports will work, but you don't get advanced features, especially some Qos functions - don't try Qos, or your switch may fry). The real issue is that some 2640T have problems connecting to the internet, while some don't.
